THE WEEKENDER is a special collaboration between OZY Tribe members near and far to provide delicious recommendations for your valuable weekend time. Next week, we'd love to feature yours too. | WHAT TO READ | | Severance — The End of the World, Millennial-Style. What if even the apocalypse couldn’t dent your routine? Ling Ma’s debut novel is a weird and funny story that melds an end-of-the-world collapse of civilization with a sharp critique of modern work culture, along with a dose of meditation on grief and the immigrant experience. | SUGGESTED BY:
/Doomsday Prepper |
| Educated — Parental Guidance. While everyone buzzes about the college admissions scandal, Tara Westover's memoir is a reminder of those who make it despite a dire lack of advantages. Raised in a family of Idaho fundamentalists, Westover narrates her own life, from homeschooling to a graduate degree from Cambridge. | SUGGESTED BY: Patrick Rojas

| Love Thy Neighbor — A Gruesome History. Investigative journalist Peter Maass was sent to Bosnia during its war, and he came back with this chilling, emotional account of life on the ground bearing witness to atrocities … and attempting to document them. | SUGGESTED BY:
/Truth Seeker |

| | WHAT TO WEAR | | ReNew Fleeces — Warmth Without Killing the Planet. OZY’s been writing a lot about the fashion industry lately, and specifically about attempts to make the famously profligate manufacturing sector more sustainable. Everlane, a brand that describes itself as basic, has its own take on that: The company has promised to completely remove new plastic from its supply chain by 2021, and it’s already marketing these fleeces (pictured), made from recycled polyester. The pullover may not appeal to non-minimalists, but Everlane’s workmanlike vibe means most of us can essentially live in it (until spring comes!). | SUGGESTED BY:
/Fashion Forward |
| From Future — Statement Cashmere, Literally. Cashmere sweaters are one of those things we talk ourselves into as investment pieces, so they’re often go-with-everything colors: Black, beige, mint green. Throw that all out the window with From Future’s neon cashmere emblazoned with weird, pop-art bananas and slogans like FLASH FORWARD. Wearing one feels like living in a cozy, expensive future envisioned by ‘90s teenagers, and isn’t that what we all always want? | SUGGESTED BY:
/Future Imperfect |

| WHAT TO LISTEN TO | | Terrible, Thanks for Asking — Grief on Tape. This is not a podcast to listen to while running or working or trying to get anything else done. The stories here are crushingly, cry-at-your-kitchen-counter sad, starting with the very first episode, in which host Nora McInerny recounts the loss of her husband to a brain tumor. The stories aren’t all about death — some are about assault, disease, all the worst things we go through as humans. If that doesn’t sound like fun … well, it isn’t. But McInerny and her guests are lively, engaging, fascinating even, and the way they deal with and deconstruct grief is refreshing.
That’s really what it’s all about: an honest discussion of grief, of our worst moments, of the ways we take care of ourselves and learn to cope. You may not be able to binge this — the heart can only take so much — but you’ll devour it nonetheless. | |

| | | Forget your carry-on. A flight bound for Kuala Lumpur from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, had to turn around last weekend when a woman informed the pilot she’d forgotten her baby at the airport. A recording of the pilot’s conversation with air traffic control went viral on social media shortly after. | |
