The cult favorite books by author Tana French have finally made it to the screen in this BBC series. It’s a twisty, creepy mystery about the death of a child … which may or may not be the handiwork of a serial killer long thought gone.

Motherless Brooklyn — A Gritty Tale.

This Edward Norton film follows a private eye with Tourette syndrome trying to solve his boss’s murder. It’s not just about that story — though it’s a gripping one — but a deep dive into the development of mid-century New York City under Robert Moses.

This is technically Season 3 of Netflix’s series about the Windsors, but it’s the first with an all-new cast. Claire Foy and Matt Smith, who played Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip for rounds one and two, have been replaced. The crown is now worn by awards season darling Olivia Colman, who is stunning and brilliant as Her Majesty.

The Idiot — Modern Bildungsroman.

Elif Batuman’s acclaimed novel is the semi-autobiographical story of a young woman studying linguistics at Harvard, using literature to get closer to a classmate and discovering to her chagrin the limits of a relationship based only on language. It may sound boring, but it’s actually laugh-out-loud funny, deeply weird and a solid testament to Batuman’s reputation as a key millennial literary voice.

Hi Tops — Finger-Lickin’ Good.

This gay sports bar in San Francisco’s historic Castro neighborhood has everything you need: live sports on plasma TVs, friendly crowds, and best of all, a fried chicken sandwich that will make you rethink all your previous choices and dedicate your life to whatever faith mandates you to eat this sandwich every day. Hi Tops is generous with the fries (and the four different sauces that accompany them), and has an impressive variety of beers on tap and deceptively strong cocktails. Lie in weight. A bar in Dubai is running an unconventional promotion: Through the end of the year, women can get free drink credits corresponding to their weight. It’s about 12 cents per pound — heavier women get more free drinks — and while the bar does have a scale, it says it’ll use the honor system and not force the women to verify their weight in order to get the free drinks.
