Photos of the Week for the month of December

New year, new photos: Tips from Ben Powless

With the new year upon us, many photographers are picking their cameras back up and making the resolution to get outside more. To help you get back out there, this month we have photographer Ben Powless giving us his tips for a great shot:

Using manual: Don’t be afraid to use your camera’s manual mode. It can be intimidating at first, but you’ll be surprised how often you’ll be able to get a better picture than your camera’s guess at what the best light levels might be.

When to overexpose: Learn when you might want to overexpose — while your camera might push you towards lowering your exposure when you’ve got the sun or its glare in frame, sometimes you can make this work with your picture.

Underexposure: Don’t be afraid of underexposure — other times you’ll need to fight the urge to have a bright image to convey a scene accurately, or to give it a specific mood.
