Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Brian Kilmeade

"Good for Brian Kilmeade."

That's how Mediaite's Colby Hall began this column about the Fox & Friends host's comments Friday morning imploring the nation to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election, and your friendly neighborhood Mediaite newsletter correspondent agrees wholeheartedly with that sentiment.

With last year's attack on the Capitol being perpetrated by supporters of former President Donald Trump who bought into his baseless claims of election fraud (along with a long list of elected officials and election workers around the country who have been subjected to harassment and threats), it's clear the "Big Lie" is not some harmless frivolity, but a conspiracy that has sparked real -- and deadly -- harm.

However, as Hall notes, for the 14 months since the 2020 election, Fox News has mostly shied away from clearly stating that Trump lost fair and square. Kilmeade bucked that trend Friday, telling his audience that American needed to "get past questioning election results" and “we have to, as a country, accept election results.”

For Trump to continue to claim that he didn't lose the election, "that doesn't help the country," Kilmeade declared.

Well said, and -- most importantly -- said to the exact audience who most needs to hear it.

MEDIA LOSER:
Fox News Channel

Five people died during the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Hundreds of police officers were wounded, some grievously, and many traumatized by the experience of being viciously assaulted by their fellow Americans. Several committed suicide in the days following the insurrection. Vice President Mike Pence, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and many other of our nation's top elected officials came within moments of encountering an angry mob that had already shown it was willing to spill blood.

But for multiple on-air personalities at Fox News, Jan. 6 was a day not for remembrance, but for ridicule and disdain.

Pete Hegseth derided the Democrats' candlelight vigil by mockingly asking if they were praying to the "god of climate change." Lawrence Jones and guest Dana Loesch smirked along with him.

Anchor Dana Perino complained that President Joe Biden's speech was "political" and "divisive," because it accurately pointed at Trump as the inspiration for the rioters' actions.

Tucker Carlson questioned why the day was being covered at all, saying it "barely rates as a footnote."

It's all the more egregious when compared to reporting by one of their very own journalists, Chad Pergram, who was at the Capitol that day and called it "frankly upsetting and traumatic" when people downplay the violence of Jan. 6

The A-Block

Reflecting on Jan. 6, one year later

Other than on Fox News (see Media Loser of the Day, above), most of the rest of the American media world took a far more somber view as the country reflected on the one-year anniversary of Jan. 6.

Anchor Neil Cavuto was an outlier among Fox News' coverage on Thursday, interviewing Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a leading Trump critic and member of the House Select Committee investigating Jan. 6, specifically asking the congressman why he thought so many of his fellow Republicans were willing to revive Trump after condemning him in the immediate aftermath of the insurrection.

Let's be fair: Fox News did air a devastating supercut of Republicans denouncing the attack on the Capitol, but it was in a paid advertisement from the Republican Accountability Project.

And Fox was not alone among conservative media in their take on the anniversary, as this compilation by Mediaite's Kipp Jones illustrates. Over on Newsmax, former acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell lamented that the real tragedy of Jan. 6 was Trump getting kicked off Twitter. Yes, really.

Former Fox News contributor Jonah Goldberg went on MSNBC to slam the "alternative narratives" about Jan. 6 promoted by some of his former colleagues.

Mediaite editor-in-chief Aidan McLaughlin collected some of the most shocking photos of chaos and violence that unfolded at the Capitol last year.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued a statement commemorating the anniversary and condemning the "criminals" who attacked the Capitol, but also blaming Democrats for "trying to exploit" the day. In contrast to his remarks shortly after the attack last year, McConnell made zero mention of Trump

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-CA) shared harrowing recollections of his experiences fleeing from the rioters with the help of the Capitol Police.

The only two Republicans to attend Pelosi's congressional address (including a moment of silence for the police officers who had lost their lives) were Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney. (Kinzinger tweeted that he supported the Cheneys and would have joined them but for the imminent birth of his son, due any day now.) The elder Cheney told reporters that he was "deeply disappointed" in GOP leadership, among other sharply critical comments.

Not a parody, it really happened: the cast of Hamilton sang during the Capitol Hill remembrances.

An ex-staffer for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told CNN's Jake Tapper that McCarthy had not reached out to any of his staff who were at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riots and slammed his former boss as a "follower" beholden to the "most extreme wing" of the party.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) went on Steve Bannon's podcast to brag about "the work we did on Jan. 6," with Gaetz defiantly declaring that they were "ashamed of nothing."

Michael Fanone, the former Capitol Police officer who is now a CNN analyst, angrily slammed the "insurrectionist members of Congress" as "jackasses."

Karl Rove wrote a blistering op-ed for the Wall Street Journal challenging his fellow Republicans to answer how they would react if instead Trump had won in 2020 and liberals had stormed the Capitol. He was on Fox News last night, so naturally they...umm, well...did not ask him about it at all

And then there's the absolutely bizarre and humiliating turn Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-TX) appearance on Tucker Carlson's show took when the Fox News host grilled the senator about calling the events of Jan. 6 a "terrorist attack."

It was such an epic meltdown that it might make the lists of notable media moments for 2022, despite happening only 6 days into the year. It seemed like the entire internet united together to mock Cruz's groveling. CNN's John Berman sent his New Day cohost Brianna Keilar into a fit of laughter when he compared Cruz to a very unfortunate Game of Thrones character.

'Ahmaud never said a word to them'

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, delivered a powerful statement at the sentencing hearing for her son’s killers on Friday.

Travis McMichael, 35, his father, Gregory McMichael, 66, and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan, 52, were all found guilty on various charges related to the 2020 slaying of the 25-year-old Arbery – who was murdered while out jogging.

In an emotional statement, Cooper-Jones spoke of the love Ahmaud had for her and his siblings and the love they had for him. While speaking about her son she recalled how he could be “messy” and then took a direct hit at the defense attorney for the McMichaels who infamously invoked Arbery having “dirty toenails” during their murder trial.

“I wish he would have cut and cleaned his toenails before he went out for that jog that day,” Cooper-Jones said. “I guess he would have if he knew he would be murdered.”

“These men deserve the maximum sentence for their crimes,” she continued. “Ahmaud never said a word to them. He never threatened them. He just wanted to be left alone. They were fully committed to their crimes. Let them be fully committed for the consequences.”

Watch her powerful statement here.
