Tick, tick, tick ... the Saints are running out of time

Good morning, and welcome to the Tuesday, October 17 edition of the Saints Insider Newsletter. Hope you brought your muckin' boots, because we're digging in deep on the Saints issues after six games.

Columnist Jeff Duncan picked up the pieces after the loss while the rest of us slackers were making our way back from Houston. Here's Jeff's thoughts, plus what he was hearing out at 5800 Airline Drive Monday.

Time's running out

Six games in, the Saints are 3-3 and are coming off yet another confounding loss. As Duncan put it in his Monday morning column, "the team’s loyal fan base has descended once again into Cat 5 crisis mode."

It's not as simple as firing a coach or cutting a player. The Saints issues are systemic.

They're one of the NFL's worst teams in the red zone, always an important statistic but especially so for a Saints team that has played in a one-score game four times in six tries. They're the most penalized team in the league. Their kicking game has led a lot to be desired.

Sure, the Saints still have 11 games left on their schedule. But if they're going to finish remotely close to where they figured they would, they need to find answers in a hurry.

Communication breakdown

You may have seen some version of the following playing out a couple times Sunday afternoon: A Derek Carr pass falling incomplete, followed by Carr holding his hands up in frustration as he yelled something at the intended receiver.

It was obvious to anyone watching Sunday's loss to the Texans that the Saints were too often not on the same page. Carr and head coach Dennis Allen spoke on that problem Monday afternoon.

Here's the gist: "Until we get on the same page, there’s going to be sucky feelings.”

More bad news

The Saints have a bunch of offensive issues, they're on a short week, and both of their preferred starting offensive tackles are hurt.

Giddy up.

Programming note

Make sure to tune in to our Saints Insider Podcast tomorrow afternoon. Either find us wherever you get your podcasts, or you can watch us break it down from our Metairie studios on our YouTube page.

Good or bad, we'll be out there every day. Thanks as always for your support.

Cheers,

Luke Johnson
