Tigers grow up, move on with NCAA win

LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey still talks about her program not having arrived yet.

Perhaps not, but the Tigers are at the point where they are certainly driving themselves in the right direction.

They took another big step on the journey Sunday night, brushing aside a dangerous Michigan team 66-42 to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament's Greenville 2 Regional.

No. 3-seeded LSU will face No. 2 Utah on Friday in the regional semifinals in Greenville, South Carolina. The game time and TV network was announced late Monday night. No. 9 Miami, which stunned No. 1-seeded Indiana 70-68 Monday in Bloomington, takes on No. 4 Villanova in the other regional semifinal.

The LSU baseball team is still No. 1 after taking two of three at Texas A&M on the SEC's opening weekend to move to 18-2 overall. The Tigers return home Tuesday to host Central Arkansas before hosting the big Arkansas (Razorbacks) this coming weekend.

Hot-hitting Tommy White, back in the lineup after that scary early season shoulder injury, earned SEC player of the week honors Monday. Outfielder Josh Pearson also recently worked his way back into the lineup and is starting to pay dividends for the Tigers.

Speaking of game times and NCAA destinations, the LSU gymnastics team got its regional assignment Monday. The No. 6-ranked Tigers will be the No. 2 seeded team in the Denver Regional behind No. 3-ranked Michigan. Unfortunately, LSU may still be without one of its best gymnasts, at least to start NCAA competition.

The LSU softball team, trying to shake off a weekend sweep by Tennessee, will try to get back in the win column Tuesday night against McNeese State (no, Will Wade won't be throwing out the first pitch). The Tigers are now 23-6 and 2-4 in SEC play.

Finally, if you watched LSU's NCAA Tournament games over the weekend, you saw the support the Tigers had in the PMAC, where nearly 19,000 fans total turned out to watch their victories over Hawaii and Michigan. Now our Jan Risher says some LSU fans are heading on the road to try to keep up that support in the Greenville Regional — the Traveling Tigers ride again.

Thanks for reading, subscribing, just basically for being such a neat person. It's a privilege to crank out our daily prose for you fine folks. Don't understand why you don't have your own statue at LSU yet.

Keep reading as we follow the Tigers to Greenville, keep up with them at The Box and Tiger Park, and report on spring football getting cranked back up Tuesday.

Until next time,

Scott Rabalais
