| TikTok Plays Defense After President Trump Threatens a Ban | |
| | Hi there, Thanks for your time this morning. TikTok has been under scrutiny in recent weeks after the Trump administration proclaimed that it would consider banning the app over concerns related to the company's ties to China. TikTok has repeatedly denied that its user data—similar to the information other social media platforms collect—is shared with Beijing officials. But Trump renewed his desires to bring regulation to the app when he again claimed to reporters on Friday that he would ban the company. There's no way he can unilaterally impose a full ban on TikTok, experts previously told Adweek. (And here's good context on what the administration can and can't do). Even still, rumors started percolating over who might buy the company, with computing giant Microsoft taking the lead. TikTok came to the defense over the weekend reiterating that the company was "not planning on going anywhere." (Read the full story on what TikTok executives said). On Sunday, Microsoft confirmed that it was, indeed, still interested in buying TikTok and that the company spoke with Trump about the potential acquisition (backstory here).
