Dear reader

Moments of humour have been few and far between over the last 12 months, but we are hoping our new columnist, Tim McGarry, will be able to provide you with some light relief.

The actor and comedian will be writing a column in the News Letter every other Thursday, and here in his second column he writes about everything from the Stormont memorial stone to our deputy editor Ben Lowry

It’s brilliant to have Tim on board. His first column, written earlier this month, was just as funny, as he took aim at Meghan and Harry amongst others.

Onto more serious issues, and for the second day in succession, Northern Ireland didn’t record a single death in relation to Covid-19. That is very welcome news indeed. However, another 183 positive tests for the virus were recorded in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, in more positive news, Health Minister Robin Swann revealed the number of people here who have received a first coronavirus vaccine jab has now exceeded 700,000 with over 800,000 vaccines administered overall. More than 100,000 people have received both jabs.

This is encouraging news and let’s hope the expected slowdown in supply next month doesn’t overly impact on the programme which has so far been such a success.
