Weekly Roundup: FPPE

Best FPPE practices to avoid negligent credentialing claims

This week, Credentialing Resource Center covers FPPE. Most accreditation bodies now require medical staffs to subject applicants with newly granted privileges to some type of FPPE. Some accrediting organizations see this as an important capstone to the process of initial appointment, and knowledgeable plaintiff attorneys often seek documentation of its performance.

Initiative launched to fight physician burnout

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM), along with more than 20 professional and educational organizations, recently launched an action collaborative to promote wellness and resilience among healthcare workers. The collaborative will begin its work next month and will hold public workshops and meetings throughout 2017 to identify and discuss the causes of burnout and find evidence-based solutions that will address stress and suicide among clinicians.

Heard this week

“We will be operating and managing in two very different worlds for a period of time … fee for service and risk/population health. These two businesses are very different and require different management skills.”

- A health system executive discusses future challenges facing the healthcare industry with the Harvard Business Review.

Sample FPPE improvement plan

FPPE is a process that requires a formal improvement plan with some form of monitoring to determine whether the improvement has been achieved. Whether an FPPE is initiated based on case review decisions by a peer review committee or evaluations of OPPE reports, having a defined format for the FPPE enhances the sense of fairness, clarifies the performance improvement goals, and allows for better oversight of the FPPE process. Today’s free resource is a sample FPPE improvement plan.

Consider the benefits and drawbacks of teleproctoring

Technology now allows the possibility of teleproctoring, whereby a proctor can directly observe another practitioner in real time without being physically present. Typically, the activity involves proctors using live video to observe practitioners from remote locations.

Leadership: Are you ready for the next step?

Developing your strengths in credentialing and privileging is not an easy task—it takes commitment and loyalty to processes, standards, and policies. Many credentialing and privileging specialists develop a penchant for independently researching and maintaining resources to stay current and contemporary in the field. Staying current in the field refines an intuitive style for ferreting out those applicants or re-applicants that could potentially be a risk for your organization. As MSPs hone those skills, they also develop their leadership skills by becoming the organization’s resident expert on credentialing and privileging. This is the foundation for advanced development as an MSP leader.
