Getting People Back to Work
Under Republican leadership in 2020, Congress passed five bipartisan COVID relief bills to jumpstart our economy and get folks the help they needed during an extremely difficult year. Our country is on the rebound, yet the Democrats continue to push policies that encourage people not to return to work—crippling what would otherwise be a much stronger economic recovery.
The latest jobs report proved what Republicans have known all along: the Democrat plan isn’t working. Small businesses reopening their doors across the country are struggling to fill open positions. Despite this increase in job opportunities, we’ve seen an increase in unemployment. I am proud South Carolina is leading the way in repealing Democrats’ unemployment benefits and incentivizing folks to reenter the workforce. Last Tuesday, I introduced legislation to ensure all states do the same. You can read more about the Get Americans Back to Work Act here.
Celebrating Charter Schools
Charter schools serve nearly 40,000 students across South Carolina, with enrollment increasing each year. Last Wednesday, I celebrated National Charter School Week with a resolution commending these schools for providing a strong educational foundation for students of all backgrounds.
As a longtime supporter of school choice, I am grateful that charter schools provide another educational option for thousands of families, opening more doors to success for kids across our state and the entire country. You can read more about my resolution here.
A Better Path Forward
While Democrats continue to push their big-spending, partisan “infrastructure” bill that funds their liberal agenda, Republicans have proposed a commonsense, targeted alternative. Unlike the Democrats’ plan, ours focuses on what Americans actually define as infrastructure: roads, bridges, ports, airports, waterways, and high-speed broadband.
If we put politics aside and come together to focus on those important infrastructure needs, I believe we can build a strong foundation for the next generation. You can read more about my views on the infrastructure debate in my USA Today op-ed.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
