After 3 months of declines, telehealth use stabilizes

Telehealth as a percentage of all medical claims rose 2% nationally from April to May after dropping for the three previous months, according to nonprofit FAIR Health’s Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker. Overall, telehealth represented 5% of all medical claims in May, up from 4.9% in April, according to tracker data, which examines privately insured plans, including Medicare Advantage, and excluding Medicare fee-for-service and Medicaid.

National survey gives telehealth good reviews

About 14% of respondents to a new the survey reported that access to telehealth kept them out of the emergency department. The new national survey of 1776 people, conducted by telephone in June and July by the Bipartisan Policy Center and Social Sciences Research Solutions, also found that 80% of respondents had a primary care health issue resolved using telehealth.

HHS inspector general pushes CoP changes to improve cybersecurity

The HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) is urging CMS to expand its hospital Conditions of Participation (CoP), or at least the interpretive guidelines for the current CoPs, to improve oversight of the cybersecurity of networked medical devices.

The OIG is concerned that neither surveyors from CMS state agencies nor those from the four accreditation organizations (AO) are asking hospitals enough questions about their cybersecurity plans unless a problem becomes evident or the facility has included cybersecurity in its emergency management risk assessment.

What changes does the OIG recommend for improving oversight?

Making changes to CMS’ interpretive guidelines for surveyors within existing hospital Conditions of Participation (CoP) may be the quickest way to increase focus on the security of networked medical devices, according to a report from the HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG). Cybersecurity of these networked devices has become a critical patient safety issue as their use has increased over the last few years along with a rise in ransomware and other cyber intrusions into health systems, said the OIG in a report released in June.

Case study: Mockup patient rooms

It’s not every day that doctors, nurses, and other clinicians get to help design their new hospital. Providers are doing just that at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital in California. The organization is planning a new, nine-story hospital building and hopes to begin construction in November.  It’s not every day that you get to design your new hospital or clinic, so when the time comes you need to make the most of it. And that’s what Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital in California is doing. The organization has designed a new, nine-story hospital building and hopes to begin construction in November.

As part of the design process, Cedars-Sinai went through a three-step process to include user feedback early on using a mockup of patient care rooms to gather suggestions on how new patient rooms should be laid out. They began with cardboard cutouts of a patient room, followed by a VR mockup and finally a full-scale model. Providers would go into the room, make their notes, and return to their departments with them. The departments would then send collated suggestions to the design team to review against existing codes and regulations.
