To trade or not to trade

Good morning, and welcome to the Tuesday, April 23 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. We're days away from the NFL draft, so let's spend this edition of the newsletter to tackle an interesting question regarding the draft: Should the Saints out of the 14th pick?

Our columnist Jeff Duncan wrote a column recently that this is the year New Orleans should finally trade down, but — spoiler alert — Dunc settled on the idea that it makes more sense for New Orleans to move back from No. 45 in the second round. The logic behind that move would be so the Saints could gain more draft capital on Day 2, given they don't pick again until the fifth round.

But what about dealing No. 14?

Well, we tackled that idea as well. I interviewed a series of draft experts that will run on NOLA.com this week, and they weighed in on the possibility of the Saints trading in either direction.

In terms of trading up, The Athletic's Dane Brugler was not a fan.

"This is a strong first round," Brugler said.  "So I think you're going to have a lot teams looking to maybe move up for a wide receiver or maybe one of these corners. There's a lot of talent that's jumbled together in the top 15 picks. I think it might be tough to move up without overpaying a little bit. Obviously, the Saints aren't in a position where they can overpay with draft picks to move up."

ESPN's Jordan Reid also said the Saints risk missing out on a top tackle if they move back too far. (That would also require them to actually trade down, which... they haven't done since 2007.)

"This is the tricky part for the Saints, just because they're surrounded on both sides, whether it's before them or behind them with teams that need an offensive tackle," Reid said. "So you don't want to trade too far back to where those teams are comfortably ahead of you, and they could select offensive tackles. I look at the Seahawks, they are definitely one team that could be in the tackle market, the Bengals at 18 are another, and even the Steelers at number 20 overall. So you don't want to go too far back to where your board starts to... Those options at the top of your board start to get picked right in front of you."

Interestingly enough, Reid said he could see a record number of tackles taken in the first round.

It should make for a fun time, especially if seeing oversized human beings hug Commissioner Roger Goodell is your thing. Regardless the draft can't get here soon enough, which is a good time to mention that we'll be doing a live draft show that you can also tune in to on our YouTube channel. The show, hosted by our Zach Ewing, starts at 6. Please tune in!

Until then, take care.

Thanks for reading,
