Today’s AJ Highlights

Good morning – Los Angeles’ LACMA has announced it will open its new Peter Zumthor building in April 2026. Construction of the controversial project is 90 percent complete, officials say. “LACMA has likened Zumthor’s design to a kind of living organism. Indeed, the raw concrete is already showing signs of weathering, with water stains and other irregularities.” Read more and see pictures of the current state of things in the LA Times report.

Here are more highlights from today’s haul:

  1. Why We Don’t Read Books The Way We Used To “Tom Cox reflects on how the act of reading books has become a struggle not due to the activity itself, but because allowing oneself to engage in reading amidst modern distractions is challenging.” – Substack
  2. One Young British Author Is Fed Up With The Industry’s Flagrant Sexism “Eliza Clark criticizes the persistent sexism in the publishing industry, highlighting her experiences around the release of her new book.” – The Guardian
  3. Classic Horror Makes A Creepy Return “Examining how classic horror games like Silent Hill are finding new life in the industry by removing combat mechanics, increasing the terror as players have no means to defend themselves.” – The Verge
  4. The Actress And Singer Who Blackmailed All Of Spain “A deep dive into a historical blackmail involving Spanish actress Bárbara Rey and King Juan Carlos I, which threatened to destabilize the monarchy.” – El País
  5. Idris Elba Says He Wants To Boost The Film Industry In Africa By Moving To Several Different Countries “Idris Elba plans to invigorate the film industry across Africa by founding a film studio in Tanzania and living in various African cities to foster local storytelling.” – The Guardian
