Good morning: This might not seem like an arts story, but it’s big. The Copyright Office just granted the right for McDonald’s franchisees to repair their McFlurry ice cream machines. “Section 1201 of the DMCA makes it illegal to bypass a digital lock that protects a copyrighted work, such as a device’s software, even when there is no copyright infringement.” What it means is that even if you can open up something you bought and repair it, you’re violating copyright by doing it. This ruling is part of a right-to-repair movement that allows a buyer the right to fix something they bought without breaking the law. There’s a better explanation here. Here are more highlights from today: - What The Universe Looks Like: A Second Copernican Revolution Is Here As Copernicus once redefined our understanding of the cosmos, a new era in astrobiology is promising to revolutionize our perception of the universe again, changing the way we think about life beyond Earth. – Noema
- A Sculpture Of A Desk With Poop On It Appeared On The National Mall. Is It Really Art? This provocative piece challenges public perceptions of art and politics, depicting a significant and controversial moment in contemporary history, stirring debate and discussion. – Washington Post
- The Composer Who Said She Channeled Liszt Explore the fascinating story of Rosemary Brown, who claimed to channel the spirits of dead composers to create music, a narrative blending mystery, music, and spiritualism. – The Conversation
- Gaza’s Music Conservatory Burned And Its Instruments Were Destroyed. All Except One “More than half of the Conservatory was burned. All the instruments were broken, thrown outside. You start seeing cases of instruments as soon as you get close to the Conservatory on the streets. Violins, we had more than 50, completely smashed. Cellos, more than 40, completely smashed.” – BBC
- Why Record Shops Are Struggling Despite A Resurgence Of Interest “Despite the vinyl boom, independent record stores are facing numerous challenges that threaten their survival, highlighting a paradox where popularity doesn’t necessarily translate to profitability.” – EuroNews
Skip down to see all the stories we collected in the past day. See you tomorrow. One week till the election! Doug
