As soon as the AUKUS treaty was announced, doubts began circulating about how the US could sell nuclear submarines to Australia, given very strict US secrecy rules, but it is now becoming clear that the goal is to sell UK-designed Astute-class boats, one of which is now making a ‘very timely’ visit to Australia.
