Despite its $398 billion acquisition cost and its projected lifetime cost of $1.7 trillion, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter still requires a Block 4 upgrade, whose cost increased by $741 million in 2021 alone. In parallel, its completion date was delayed by an additional three years, GAO said.
