Parker Hobson

There is a thin, curvy line
between laughter and slaughter, I try yelling
to you on the roller coaster but my timing
is off, our shark bodies flung
into runaway cursive, vestigial Converses dragging serifs
across the clouds. Still, it feels nice to be held
in a system. Look at this shape I'm tracing!
Look at the intestinal, steel-swept whale spine of how I'm staying
to the end. In a few minutes, sharing sno-cones
beneath our little quilt of redactions, you'll bring up how neocons
sold out the Amazon. I won't tell you
I wish you would ask me what I'd been trying to tell you.
Is there an official corporate sponsor for recognizing a feeling
as mostly ridiculous, while feeling it wholly?
Mid-air together, in the state-inspected momentum,
our city spreads out like a mnemonic that forgot
what it stands for—the ranch-houses notched
like foosball teams across the plains,
the kids hoping to pass for skater kids all glowing
from the midway like steeples
from a TVA lake. And the horizon window-
silling us here, plural, painted shut.

"A Conversation with Daniel Borzutzky"

"We are always faced with the limits of language and language’s inability to represent the unspeakable. But perhaps translation is about the wild possibilities of language, about compelling meaning and energy and rhythm and pain and love and beauty and horror to move across languages and cultures and borders and boundaries, thus perhaps it’s more about language’s elasticity than its limitations."

"My work in medical poetry soon evolved into my work in the medical humanities. I began reading about the techniques and modalities of therapeutic poetry, and, soon after, I was conducting workshops in the community, developing a course called Poetry & Medicine, and eventually, I formed my therapeutic poetry nonprofit, Revisionary Arts."
