Catherine Pond

You like sex with other women
because it makes you feel safe,
she says. Nothing makes me
feel safe, I explain. She is married

but when her daughter wins
the fishing contest at Sacandaga,
she offers me the prize trout.
Later, loosening the flesh

from the spine, I do not feel
relieved, or thankful. She who knows
me best believed I might be
nourished by this small, dead thing.

Formal photographic portrait of Ashley M. Jones, Alabama's next poet laureate
"Alabama’s Next Poet Laureate Writes Searingly About Race"

The poet Ashley M. Jones wants far more than financial reparations to compensate for centuries of slavery and its legacies—though she would take a check. To her, true reparations require an enormous cultural evolution. 'You think money can ever repay what you stole?' she asks in her third poetry collection, Reparations Now!, which was published in September.

What Sparks Poetry:
Shara Lessley on Li-Young Lee's "My Father, in Heaven, Is Reading Out Loud

"The more I studied 'My Father, in Heaven...,' the more I appreciated the stanzas’ complexity, pattern-making, and interiority, and how the poem reflected the lyric’s capacity as a communal art. I knew this is what I wanted. Whether I could write anything of dimension was uncertain. But in Lee’s work I discovered textures of energy, music, and intimacy I hoped to emulate—even if I couldn’t predict my effort’s outcome."
