Malcolm de Chazal (1902 - 1981) was a Mauritian writer and painter. This is a selection from the "Poems of Malcolm de Chazal" (trans. Sara Nicholson) published in 2024 by Free Poetry. A second volume, the "Selected Prose of Malcolm de Chazal," is forthcoming from Free Poetry in 2025. Free Poetry, funded by Boise State University's Creative Writing Program, publishes books of poetics and poetry in translation.

“There was both a formal and conceptual reason for drawing tight frames around some of the images or poems while letting others wander around freely and do their own thing. The juxtaposition of control and chaos is exciting to me. It is also integral to what it feels like to move around a large city: the footage is sprawling and endless, and yet there is an element of feeling contained and restrained in the little box that is the room of your probably tiny apartment."
