The Garden of Eden
Rachel Abramowitz
Spring, my little knife,
skittish as a criminal drunk

on scholarship, here I am
on your doorstep, bearing the warts

of our long acquaintance. The sky
negligees its way through every globe of dew

caught in the earth's unwashed hair.
You are the season of loathing, of one

half of the brain refusing to question
the other half, preferring

to cyclops its way through the grift.
Hold this fencepost, hand me the hammer.

If God is to think about human beings
it must be in a piece of land with a fence around it.

The auctioneers say it is considered one of the most important works in Scottish literature, and is valued at between £50,000 and £60,000."

What Sparks Poetry: Spencer Reece on "Veni Creator Spiritus"

"Grief the weather over my desk as I wrote some of these poems. Grief fogging up the windowpanes in particular poems. Grief came with its own weird chant, grief that strange emotion where you know what you miss before you understand why....In this poem, a young man dies. Like in the poem, his name is Steven Hobbs. The name engraved into my tombstone of a poem. The ambition of the poem? Remember Steven Hobbs. The labor of the poem? Love. The words my Doric column for Eternity."
