Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chuck Todd

Meet The Press Reports, Chuck Todd’s deep-dive show on streaming service NBC News Now, kicks off its second season Thursday, with the host exploring violent domestic extremism in the U.S. and whether the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol could be a harbinger of potential future violence.

“The season premiere dives into how populism, grievance politics and nationalism play into extremism and what law enforcement, national security experts and elected officials can do to combat domestic terrorism in the future,” NBC News said in a statement.

The first episode will feature reporting from NBC News correspondent and NBC News Now co-anchor Morgan Radford, as well as a panel of experts on extremism.

Meet the Press Reports is a weekly 30-minute program covering a single topic. Todd told Mediaite about his favorite moments in the show, and what they've accomplished.

The series promises to be an interesting one, reinforcing Todd's expansive presence on air that already includes a daily MSNBC show and storied NBC News Sunday show.

MEDIA LOSER:
60 Minutes

The Poynter Institute for Media Studies sided with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Wednesday in his dispute with CBS News’ 60 Minutes.

“A sloppy moment on Sunday’s show is raising serious concerns,” the nonprofit fact-checking group’s Tom Jones noted in a column on its website. He said a Sunday story from the network’s Sharyn Alfonsi and Oriana Zill de Granados alleging that DeSantis provided a handful of Publix grocery stores with early access to Covid-19 vaccines failed to deliver the goods, writing, “If DeSantis ran a ‘pay-for-play’ scheme involving vaccinations for the coronavirus — that’s an explosive story. But 60 Minutes really didn’t deliver substantial evidence that DeSantis did any such thing.”

“There was really no there there,” said the Poynter fact-checker.

Along with other commentary, he noted rather succinctly: "This was not one of the show’s finer moments."

Despite the bipartisan volley of criticism, 60 Minutes has stood by its reporting this week, telling Mediaite in a Tuesday statement the story came from conducting “interviews with dozens of sources and authorities.”

The A-Block

I’m Done!

Former Fox News host Eric Bolling walked away during a contentious BBC News debate on Wednesday after a fellow guest called his comments “ignorant” and “disrespectful.”

The incident took place during an exchange between Bolling and Aisha Mills on a new voting law in the state of Georgia, including businesses that have left as a result. “I think it’s really rich for any Republican, especially a White man, to run around and claim they care about the economic condition of Black communities and Black businesses when that’s all a lie,” Mills said, directing the comment at Bolling.

“That is not fair!” Bolling protested. “You don’t know me. You don’t know who I am.”

Mills continued after BBC anchor Emily Maitlis told Bolling to let Mills speak. “I am … a Black person in America,” Mills said. “Everything that these voting laws stand for … is all about racial discrimination. How dare you try to act like you are somehow a proponent of Black people and businesses just to make a point and try to create a wedge? It’s ignorant and it’s just disrespectful.”

“You know what? That’s disgusting,” Bolling replied. “I’m done. Put me off. That’s disgusting. I am nowhere near anything you are painting me to be, and the problem with America politics is exactly that. Because I’m White, you think I’m racist? That’s BS. I’m done.”

Bolling stood up to leave, and...

'How Dare You'

Fox News contributor Leo Terrell tore into Geraldo Rivera when the latter asked him “when was the last time you were in the ghetto?”

Terrell and Rivera have sparred with each other plenty of times on Fox before, and on Thursday, they joined Bill Hemmer to talk about Tishaura Jones — the newly-elected, first African American mayor of St. Louis. The discussion centered around Jones’ ideas for reducing the city’s crime rates and reforming law enforcement.

Sounds simple enough, but man did it get heated.
