🧳 How Common Is International Travel Among Americans? |
To listen to Clark discuss it, you’d think traveling the world is normal. But the stats say otherwise. |
Just 26% of Americans have been to at least five countries according to Pew Research Center. Compared to Europeans, that’s a relatively low number. |
Here are the countries where at least 40% of those surveyed fit into what Pew calls the “globe-trotter” category (five or more countries visited): |
Sweden: 88% Netherlands: 83% Germany: 70% UK: 69% Australia: 54% France: 54% Italy: 47% Canada: 43% Spain: 42%
|
Age is a big factor among Americans. Of those under 30 years old, just 17% achieved “globe-trotter” status. That figure reached 37% among those 65 or older. |
That’s probably because of the strong correlation between income and travel. Among those that Pew classified as “upper income,” 67% had visited at least five countries. |
People with postgraduate degrees (59%) who live in the suburbs (31%)were more likely to be globe-trotters than those with high school diplomas (10%) who live in rural areas (16%). |
Globe-trotters have a more world-centric view, according to Pew. They’re much more likely to: |
