Dear reader, To visit the R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant is to remember that Toronto is capable of greatness. Just look at the thing. Built in the 1930s, it stands like a war monument, projecting its art deco magnificence across the lake as if daring the Americans to marvel. Local legends like Michael Ondaatje and Guillermo del Toro have immortalized the building in their work. Couples flock there to celebrate their marital bliss. And the place cleans up to 950 million litres of water a day, literally giving life to the city.
If you’re one of the few Torontonians who has never eyeballed the R. C. up close, you can find it right at the eastern edge of the Beaches. The Queen streetcar goes straight there. Or if you happen to reside in Curb Appeal’s top post this week, you can walk to it along the sand. I’m talking about a five-bathroom, five-bedroom stylistic potpourri fronting Balmy Beach Park that’s currently going for $5.3 million. I guess that’s the price of living next to greatness.
