Good morning. Temperatures will be in the high 20s to low 40s with a chance for snow and rain throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Why fossil-fuel generators oppose the CMP hydropower corridor

  • The $1 billion corridor could lower wholesale energy prices paid to companies that generate electricity in New England and in turn lower prices for consumers, according to the report by Stepwise Data Research, an economic analysis firm in Yarmouth.

While some consumers might welcome that news, lower wholesale prices would pressure struggling energy producers in Maine and across New England, making it more difficult for them to stay in business, experts say.

Inmate boarding costs could reach $1M as state cracks down on Bangor jail’s overcrowding
  • The Maine Department of Corrections has told Penobscot County it can no longer exceed its jail's licensed capacity of 157 inmates. While other county jails have had overcrowding, the Bangor jail has had the most chronic overcrowding problems in the state, according to Maine's corrections commissioner.

This 20-something Presque Isle city councilor wants more young people to stay in The County

  • Presque Isle City Councilor Jake Shaw is, by far, the youngest member of the Star City’s elected government at age 27. And as the only twenty-something on the council, he has taken on a broader crusade: to keep Presque Isle’s youth in the city and to make them civically engaged.
Susan Collins says she wanted to hear from Bolton and EU ambassador in Trump trial
  • After voting to acquit President Donald Trump last week, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine told reporters she wished senators heard testimony from Trump's former national security adviser and the ambassador who gave earlier contradictory testimony on the president's Ukraine actions. Collins, a Republican who is up for re-election in 2020, backed an unsuccessful push to allow witnesses during the trial.
Man accused in Down East triple homicide visited victim’s house a month ago

  • Gorden Flynn, the husband of one of Jennifer Bryant Flynn, found his wife dead in their Machias home on Monday. The couple had welcomed the man accused in the killings into their home, most recently a month ago.
Bangor to close half of waterfront park during 2½-year construction project
  • Beginning Monday, the city will fence off the section of park that starts below the parking lot behind Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion and extends south about a half mile to Dutton Street, just behind Hollywood Casino. That will allow workers to start preparing for the construction project, which is part of a larger years-long effort by the city to prevent sewage from entering the Penobscot River.

Bigfoot in Maine? 10-foot-tall ‘wild man’ was killed in 1886, newspapers reported
  • The story starts in early October 1886 when “an affrighted Frenchman from over the line” arrived in Waterville to weave a frightening tale of woe.

“The Frenchman’s story, which is implicitly believed, is that three men were camping out in the woods about a hundred miles north of Moosehead Lake,” the Waterville Sentinel reported. “Two of the campers were away from the camp for a week and came back to find the dead body of their companion.”
