Just before the late California architect Marcel Sedletzky gave up practicing full time to become an educator in the early 1970s, he was commissioned to design an unconventional home tucked into a wooded setting in Carmel Valley, about 12 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. The angled rooflines shelter a meandering home that includes a sunken conversation area in the living room and vibrant, multicolored stained-glass accents throughout. Priced at almost $5 million, the home’s five bedrooms include a spacious guest house. And in Washington, D.C., a striking red-brick townhouse in the historic Georgetown neighborhood, crafted by famed architect Hugh Newell Jacobson, has hit the market at $4.2 million. The four-story home's striking exterior and carefully updated minimalist interiors earned it several commendations, including Architectural Record’s #1 Award of Excellence for House Design.
