In the early years of the 20th century, railroad baron and financier John Jay Phelps built a 10,000-square-foot Tudor mansion on a roughly 7.5-acre island just off the coast of Branford, Connecticut. Known today as Rogers Island and recently put up for sale at $35 million, the one-of-a-kind property offers total seclusion amid rolling lawns shaded by mature trees and meandering paths that connect the house to a waterside guest cottage, a swimming pool, terraced formal gardens, and a Jack Nicklaus-designed putting green. Legendary actress Katharine Hepburn was a long-time resident of Connecticut’s Old Saybrook community, but for almost 65 years she also maintained a townhouse in New York City’s tony Turtle Bay neighborhood that’s come up for grabs for $7.2 million. The Oscar winner acquired the late 19th-century home in 1931 and lived there until her death in 2003. Highlights include a mirrored vanity Hepburn had installed during her ownership and a spacious garden with access to a private park shared by just 20 surrounding homes.
