East Baton Rouge program gives teens early look at being first responders

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

The East Baton Rouge Parish EMS service has only 75 of the 102 total medics it requires, leading to a high volume of calls and potential burnout for medics. "Some of our medics don't have any downtime. They're literally going from one call to the next," said Brad Harris, a paramedic with East Baton Rouge EMS.

To help develop future emergency personnel, East Baton Rouge EMS works with Explorers Post 912 in a program that connects teens with local first responders to gain hands-on training in the basics of firefighting or emergency medical care.

"Our medics see it as an opportunity to teach their future co-workers," Harris said.

"It was too painful for him to talk about," his daughter Adele Martinez said.

Martinez died last month at the age of 78. Read what his classmates and others had to say about that historic period.
