By Sharme Brodie, RN, CCDS Usually the attendees in the basic CDI Boot Camp are brand new to the role—many haven’t even started their position prior to attending the class. As the class goes on (by the end of the second day or beginning of the third day) I start to see the changes in their facial expressions and body language. I know right then that they are thinking: “What did I get myself into?” and “How do I get out?” It’s usually when I have a conversation about the position having a steep learning curve, even for the most experienced professionals. For those who hail from nursing backgrounds, we discuss that many will mourn the loss of that daily patient interaction as they transition from taking care of patients and their families to writing queries. |
| ACDIS Picks While some providers may decide to tackle documentation and coding challenges through coder and physician education alone, the audit piece is perhaps just as important, since delayed claims submission due to physician queries directly affects cash flow and, therefore, a hospital's operating income. After a five-year code freeze, the ICD-10 classification system will be back on a regular cycle for annul updates. The ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee met on March 9 and 10 to review proposals for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS that, if approved, would be included in the October 1, 2017 classification system addenda for fiscal year (FY) 2018. In general, the time spent reviewing and coding records has increased since ICD-10 implementation for most record types, according to a recent ICD-10 productivity survey conducted by HIM Briefings. Q: I am never sure of correct sequencing when the admission is for flu, pneumonia, and asthma. Can you suggest proper sequencing, and if queries are needed?
