Bonjour from France! Despite the US State Department issuing a worldwide travel alert, Natalie and I still traveled to the ILTM conference in Cannes, France just like the thousands of other attendees from around the world.
Of course, the recent attacks are on everyone's minds but we won't let them dictate our travel plans. It seemed most of the other attendees felt the same way as only a handful canceled.
I know some think this is a crazy time to go to France while others think this is the best time to visit. I'm in the latter group, since right after a tragedy, it's usually much safer due to heightened security. And this is when France wants and needs support the most. The ironic thing is that many Europeans are scared to travel to America because of the mass shootings that happen on a regular basis, including right now in San Bernardino, California.
Security is definitely beefed up in France but it's not crazy. The conference I'm attending and some hotels have security, including body searches, at the entrance, which is comforting.
On Saturday night, Natalie and I flew British Airways on one of their amazing new 787 aircrafts from Toronto to London (flight time was a quick 5:55) and then another 90 minutes to Nice in the south of France. The plane was packed and it felt like business as usual. Same in Cannes.
We're here for the International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), which introduces global travel buyers to a collection of international travel experiences. It's a brilliant conference and so great to run into old friends and meet new ones.
The show wraps up in a couple of days and then we will travel somewhere very special before heading back to North America. If you want to follow along, follow my FacebookInstagram, and Twitter handles.
