Damage to expansion joints on bridge decks costs U.S. highway agencies millions of dollars each year. TRB is hosting a webinar on Thursday, June 18, 2020 from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Eastern that will identify ways to mitigate these damages and costs. Of specific concern are the bearings below the joint in a bridge. A bearing assembly that is frozen or damaged due to deterioration caused by inadequate joints may overstress the bridge components, which may result in potentially costly repairs. Presenters will discuss current methods for designing, constructing, maintaining, and operating bridge joints and bearings that may mitigate many damages. They will also examine various details for several types of bridges.

This webinar draws on research from the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Domestic Scan Program 17-03: Experiences in the Performance of Bridge Bearings and Expansion Joints Used for Highway Bridges.
