Getting Ahead
Treat the job search like a marketing exercise
Start the job search by focusing on your strengths and treat your resume like a marketing document instead of a bio, career coaches advise. Keep the big picture in focus and stress what you can do for the company.

Get everyone on board when making a career change
Career changes can be scary, but gathering support early can make the transition go much smoother, says Carrie Kerpen, CEO of Likeable Media. "Share why you're making a shift and how you're planning to do it with your inner circle, like your family, partner, friends, and close professional connections," she writes.

Hire Smart
Are you running background checks before hiring?
Instead of simply trusting the credentials you're given, it's never been easier for small-business owners to run a background check on a potential hire, writes columnist Habiba Nasir. Different providers are discussed, along with the need to stay compliant with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Over 80% of students reported that their selected major was key for job prospects, according to Handshake, although only half of the website's premium hiring companies list a major requirement on their postings. "The new world of work is about skills, not necessarily degrees," said JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.

How a small tech company embraced employee turnover
Tech firms have the highest employee turnover, with a median tenure as low as one year at even some of the largest firms. After employees started noticing the consistent departures at Paragus, CEO Delcie Bean reframed the high turnover by celebrating departures as graduations, making a Wall of Fame for employees who left on good terms and redesigning Paragus's business model to better accommodate onboarding.

Josh McCown just completed his first year as a high school quarterback coach in Charlotte, N.C., while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. Each week this fall, McCown chartered a plane to North Carolina for the high school's Monday practices and for Friday games, and recently let ESPN tag along on a typical travel day that, in less than 24 hours, saw him practice twice with the Eagles while flying to and from North Carolina for a playoff win.
