The Lunch Line: Tropical Storm Elsa strengthens, Slidell casino will go to voters, college athletes cash in

By Bob Warren

Marathon casino meeting: Unless you were scouring the headlines just after midnight, you might have missed this one: St. Tammany voters will get to vote on whether to allow a casino to open on a plot near Lake Pontchartrain in the Slidell area. A sharply-split Parish Council, after a marathon meeting that began Wednesday and stretched into Thursday, agreed to put the issue on the Nov. 13 ballot. Stay tuned as campaigns on both sides of that issue heat up.

Elsa watch: Tropical Storm Elsa has formed and forecasters say it could make its way into the Gulf of Mexico by early next week. Prepare to be deluged with “Frozen” references . . .

Cashing in: It’s a big day in college sports. NCAA rules allowing college athletes to cash in on their fame -- names, images and likeness – take effect today. What’s all mean? Scott Rabalais has this take. And here's an early look at some of the athletes who've jumped on the bandwagon.

Jimmy Fitzmorris dies: Jimmy Fitzmorris, who grew up in the Irish Channel and went on the become one of the state’s best-known politicians, died Wednesday at the age of 99. Known as “Fitz,” he won multiple elections to the New Orleans City Council and the state’s lieutenant governor’s office. RIP.

Also in the news: Kenner police are searching for man accused of shooting a Good Samaritan who intervened in a fight. And frustrations are growing over delays in garbage collection in some parts of the city.

All this and much more in today’s Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us.
