Get ready for summer's latest sunsets🌇

From catching glimpses of the Northern Lights to chasing a dazzling sunset, it's no secret that Michigan has gorgeous sky-gazing opportunities. But there's actually a science to why Michigan sees its latest sunsets after the summer solstice.

The latest sunsets come after the summer solstice because the day is more than 24 hours long at this time of the year. The latest sunsets always come on or near June 27 at mid-northern latitudes. Check out the latest sunset times for a few Michigan cities here.

Speaking of looking at the skies, Sleeping Bear Dunes is continuing its “Half the Park is After Dark” campaign to encourage visitors to come after sunset. The park is hosting a star party on Saturday, June 28 at the Dune Climb where participants can use telescopes to view the nighttime sky.

Truckers in Michigan, across US practice English skills as Trump’s new language policy takes effect

Brushing up on English has taken on new urgency for future and current truck drivers after President Donald Trump issued an executive order saying truckers who don’t read and speak the language proficiently would be considered unfit for service. Truckers who learned English as a second language are concerned they may lose their jobs if they make a mistake or speak with a heavy accent while under questioning. Requiring truck drivers to speak and read English isn’t new, but the penalty for not meeting the proficiency standard is becoming more severe.

More jobs on the way: An autonomous long-haul truck company plans to invest nearly $5.6 million to create an engineering hub in Ann Arbor Township. The Michigan Strategic Fund awarded TORC Robotics a $3 million grant during its Tuesday, June 24 board meeting to support the project that’s expected to create hundreds of high-paying tech jobs.

In the workforce: Exactly 700 workers were put on the chopping block this month as many companies were acquired or chose to consolidate operations. Here are seven Michigan companies that reported to the state plans to lay off employees in June.

Torrential rain possible for Michigan; See the tropical connection

Getting stormy: Over the next several days several blobs of thunderstorms will roll across Michigan. At any one spot expect an hour or two of heavy rain producing thunderstorms. The thunderstorms will cover less than half of Lower Michigan. We should have a break in the heavy rain bursts for the weekend, but may get back into the heavy bursts early next week.

The water in Lake Superior sloshed back-and-forth like a bathtub between Minnesota and Michigan when a storm system caused a tidal-like phenomenon known as a seiche across the region this weekend. National Weather Service meteorologists say the largest Great Lake experienced a significant seiche, possibly the largest on Lake Superior in years, starting overnight Friday, June 20 and lasting until Sunday, June 22.

Water temperatures: The hot weather over the last few days has helped at least the southern half of Lake Michigan warm up quite a bit. Lake Erie has also been in the heart of the hot weather and is heating up. Lakes Huron and Superior remain quite cold on the Michigan side.

‘We’re the guinea pigs’: Solar farm is first in Michigan to go to state for approval

A divisive law putting state regulators, rather than local townships, in the driver’s seat for permitting sprawling renewable energy projects is getting a trial run in Michigan. On June 18, developers filed with the Michigan Public Service Commission for approval of a new solar farm on 873 acres in rural Ingham County, marking the first project to leapfrog local review under a 2023 law passed by Democrats.

Invasive mosquito: Mosquito control officials discovered a lone adult Aedes aegypti — known as “the yellow fever mosquito” — for the first time in Saginaw County. Considered an invasive mosquito to North America, the yellow fever mosquito can transmit diseases to people, including the Zika, dengue and  chikungunya viruses, Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission Director William Stanuszek said in a statement.

What to know: Coyote pups are leaving their dens this time of year. As the vulnerable young coyotes get to know their surroundings, Ann Arbor residents may be more likely to spot their wild neighbors. Experts say knowing how to respond could save lives and aid ecosystems.

2025 NBA draft: Why the Pistons might target All-American guard

Pistons draft strategy: With the No. 37 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons might target Marquette guard Kam Jones, reports Jacob Richman. The 23-year-old consensus second-team All-American averaged career highs in points (19.2), assists (5.9) and rebounds (4.5) last season. Jones' flexibility as a combo guard with shot creation skills could address Detroit's backcourt needs as several guards enter free agency.

Michigan legend: Joe Byrd, patriarch of Flint's first family of boxing and head coach of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team, has died at 89. The renowned trainer, whose son Chris became a two-time heavyweight world champion, operated the Joe Byrd Boxing Academy for years and mentored countless fighters. "He was a hell of a coach," former WBC champion Anthony Dirrell told Ron Fonger. Byrd died just over a week after the 10th anniversary of his wife Rose's passing.

NBA Draft: Michigan State guard Jase Richardson is projected to be a first-round pick in Wednesday's NBA draft, with ESPN analyst Jay Bilas predicting he could land in the lottery range (picks 12-16). The son of former MSU All-American Jason Richardson averaged 12.1 points last season and is valued for his offensive skills despite size concerns, reports Matt Wenzel.

Educational fun: Great Lakes lovers who dream of getting closer to the action can be freshwater scientists for the day during an exclusive science expedition cruise on Lake Michigan. For just three days, the research vessel W.G. Jackson is docking at the Michigan Maritime Museum from Thursday, June 26 to Saturday, June 28. The 90-minute expedition cruise will take participants along the Black River out to Lake Michigan where they will conduct water quality testing experiments.

Reopening today: Big Sable Point Lighthouse at Ludington State Park will start its season, along with the park, on Wednesday, June 25, Lakeshore Keepers announced. That’s six days earlier than originally planned.

Improvements coming soon: A Lake Michigan park has secured funding for trail improvements and ecological restoration. Local officials were awarded a $250,000 grant from Consumers Energy on Monday, June 23, for Dune Harbor Park in Norton Shores. The funding will go toward ecological restoration activities like invasive species removal, planting of native foliage and the establishment of pollinator habitat.
