TOP OF THE AGENDA | Shares fall as Trump announces car tariffs |
| | Trump's latest move threatens to upend global car trade and supply chains. Credit: EPA | Donald Trump has announced tariffs of 25% on cars and car parts coming into the US, set to come into effect from Wednesday. The president claims these import taxes will lead to "tremendous growth" for the US car industry, boosting jobs and investment, but analysts say they're likely to lead to the temporary shutdown of significant car production in the US and increase prices by thousands of dollars. On Wednesday, shares in General Motors slid about 3%, while Stellantis – the owner of Jeep and Chrysler – fell 3.6%. The billionaire Elon Musk has said the impact on Tesla will be “significant”. |
| | | What are tariffs?: President Trump hopes that the import taxes will boost US manufacturing and protect jobs. Others are less sure. Six potential price rises: Tariffs have to be paid by businesses who often pass the costs on to consumers. These are some of the items people in the US could soon be paying more for. TikTok: President Trump said he may cut tariffs on China to help seal a deal for TikTok to be sold by its owner ByteDance. | |
