Firefighters from across Michigan filled the State Capital on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024, calling on legislators to take up House Bill 4688. The bill would require staffing discussions to be a part of the collective bargaining process between unions and their respective municipalities. It wouldn't mandate any staffing levels. Who, when and where: A closer look at Michigan’s 30-year high abortion rate |
Looking at the numbers: Michigan saw an increase in reported abortions in 2023, one year after voters secured reproductive freedom via constitutional amendment. With 31,241 induced abortions, the state reached a nearly 30-year high last year, according to data published by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Here are four takeaways from Michigan’s 2023 abortion data. On the rise: With one month left to go in 2024, Saginaw County officials are hoping a growing trend of infants dying in their sleep comes to an end. As of Nov. 30, 11 children have died from unsafe sleep practices in Saginaw County this year. That’s an increase from 2023’s total of 10 and 2022’s five. Michigan Momnibus: State lawmakers say they are taking steps to improve prenatal and maternal health care for all birthing people, especially Black and Brown mothers who have historically had disproportionately bad outcomes. The package of eight bills aims to increase reporting on obstetric violence and racism and create additional protections to ensure the safety and wellbeing of mothers. |

Controversial DeVos, Van Andel riverfront development project clears major hurdle |
Approved: A Grand Rapids City Commission committee has approved a $565 million Transformational Brownfield incentive Tuesday for a massive downtown riverfront development containing high-end housing, a hotel, an office tower and more. The $797 million project is proposed by Fulmar Property Holdings, a company comprised of members of the DeVos and Van Andel families. Business deal: Bell’s Brewery’s Upper Peninsula offshoot, Upper Hand Brewery, is being sold by the Bell’s parent company in a deal expected to close in early 2025. The buyer, California-based Seven Beverages, Inc., is in the process of securing its alcohol license in Michigan, according to a statement from New Belgium. Be aware: General Motors is adding an estimated 132,000 pickup trucks to a recall that was announced earlier this year because of ongoing issue with the tailgates. According to the Associated Press, the recall impacts certain 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks that feature a manual gate and power lock and release. |

‘Keep your promise’: Firefighters pack Michigan Capitol in response to low staffing |
In Lansing: Hundreds of firefighters packed the Michigan Capitol Building on Tuesday, banging on the rotunda guardrails and chanting for lawmakers to “take the vote” and “keep your promise.” The firefighters traveled to Lansing to advocate for a stalled bill that would require the topic of minimum staffing levels be part of collective bargaining discussions between firefighters and the cities and townships they serve. Police officers would also be included in this change. Be on the lookout: Police in Macomb and Oakland counties are searching for a crew of thieves believed to have robbed numerous businesses during the Thanksgiving holiday break. According to WXYZ-Detroit, police believe at least 25 businesses reported break-ins with most of them occurring between Wednesday and Friday of last week. Crime prevention: Reducing gun violence is a top priority for Kalamazoo leaders — and they’re backing that up with help from a $1.25 million state grant from the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. The money will fund a variety of projects that aim to reduce gun violence through outreach programs, trainings, mentorship and police overtime funding. |

Strengthening Clipper storm headed for Michigan, bringing several inches of snow, gusty winds |
More winter weather on the way: A Clipper storm system is getting stronger as it approaches the Great Lakes, and is forecast to bring some very wintry mid-week weather that could make travel difficult in some areas. Several inches of snow are expected, with the heaviest amounts along and west of the U.S. 131 corridor, according to the National Weather Service. More details: "A sharp cold front comes through late Wednesday afternoon and may be accompanied by snow squalls," according to NWS staff in Grand Rapids. "The combination of winds gusting over 40 mph, lake effect snow and temperatures falling through the 20s and into the teens will result in hazardous travel conditions Wednesday night, with whiteouts possible in falling and blowing snow.” Snow-ly cow: The National Weather Service office in Marquette has put out a 4-day tally of snow totals, stretching to include Thanksgiving Day through the long weekend. Some of the map’s big snow winners are: McMillan (Luce County) with 40 inches, Munising (Alger County) with 35.3 inches, Painesdale (Houghton County) with 29.1 inches and Big Bay area (Marquette County) with 14.9 inches. |
