Looking ahead to the weekend |
We're half way through the week, which means it's the perfect time to start planning ahead for weekend festivities. If you're a history buff, the 37th-annual Jackson Civil War Muster kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Cascades Falls Park. Known as the biggest Civil War reenactment in the Midwest, visitors can expect battle reenactments, demonstrations, vintage baseball, an 1860s brass band and more. For the wine aficionados, head to Suttons Bay for a private Vineyard Tour and Tasting Experience at Shady Lane Cellars. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as the tour takes about two hours. The experience includes six wine tastings and snacks that are offered at different points in the tour. |

Trump, in Michigan return, says he’ll stop ‘Kamala crime wave’ |
Campaign trail: During remarks to a crowd of law enforcers and supporters in Howell, former President Donald Trump warned of a coming “World War III” if voters don’t return him to the White House in November. He also claimed police were “under assault” and were experiencing “difficulty with the laws of the land,” based on policies supported by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. During an interaction with a reporter, Donald Trump seemed to reject criticism of his campaign’s choice to visit Howell, a Michigan town known for having ties to white supremacy, pointing out President Joe Biden once appeared there too. Taking the stage: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is scheduled to address the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, August 22. She joins other Michiganders in the DNC speaker lineup, including United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. |

Kalamazoo’s homeless population at 5-year high, according to annual count |
Kalamazoo County’s homeless population has reached a five-year high, according to data gathered in this year’s annual Point-in-Time count. The number of those staying in emergency shelters increased from 396 to 452 year over year, while those staying in transitional shelters rose from 76 to 90, according to the report. According to the data, the largest increase was seen in families with children. Who was counted?: The unsheltered number included people whose primary nighttime residence was in a public place not meant for human habitation—like tents, cars, parks, campgrounds, abandoned buildings, bus or train stations and parking lots. Those who are doubled-up, couch surfing or staying in a hotel are not included in this number. Sheltered individuals include those who are living in a shelter, hotel, or transitional housing. Also in housing: The city of Kalamazoo is putting $1.2 million in COVID-19 relief toward the creation of emergency shelter space for families with children. |

Atomic bomb waste shipments to Michigan landfill spark outcry |
Michigan lawmakers and local officials are crying foul over plans to ship 6,000 cubic yards of radioactive soil and concrete waste leftover from the Manhattan Project from a cleanup project in New York to a hazardous waste landfill in Wayne County. The details: Wayne Disposal is the only Michigan landfill licensed to take hazardous and low-level radioactive waste. Federal officials say the material is just slightly above natural background radiation levels that people experience daily but is being handled with extra care as a precaution. In transportation: Michigan’s first “Shark Tank” style competition is now taking applications from startups with innovative transportation solutions. |

Teen couple charged in plot to kill Michigan girl’s mother who took away phone |
Charged as adults: A 14-year-old girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend are accused of plotting to kill the girl’s mother after the girl was punished for previous bad behavior. According to Fox 2 Detroit, the teens—who have been charged as adults, but are not being publicly identified due to their age—were arrested and charged following an investigation that began in July. Update: A man who allegedly shot and killed his wife before shooting himself remains in critical condition three days later, according to the Michigan State Police. Car crash: A 31-year-old Bloomfield Hills man was arraigned on numerous charges over the weekend after he allegedly led police on a high-speed chase that hit speeds of over 100 miles-per-hour. According to WDIV-Detroit, Justin Luark was arrested around 1 a.m. Saturday after he crashed his truck into a tree and attempted to flee the scene on foot. |

Historic Sleeping Bear Inn reawakens for the first time in 50 years |
Book a stay: After a 50-year slumber the Sleeping Bear Dunes Inn reawakened this summer, welcoming guests back to the 19th century bed and breakfast. The historic lodge has been shuttered since the 1970s, but a two year, $1.7 million restoration effort by a nonprofit has the inn back open for business. Tall tales: There’s a perfectly Michigan photo-op waiting at this little Lake Huron beach in Northern Michigan. Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox stand posed and ready at Ossineke Beach in Sanborn Township, about 14 miles south of Alpena. Be sure to read up on the tale of the larger than life lumberjack before heading over for a trip. Speaking of Sleeping Dunes: If you’re looking for seclusion on your Sleeping Bear Dunes trip consider venturing to one of the park’s inland lakes for a break from the tourist hot spots. |
