Trump reveals plans after assassination attempt, Queensland kids in custody, Spain beat England in Euro final

Paul Gallagher

Good morning. As the US grapples with the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump and investigators delve more into the life and possible motivations of the suspected gunman, the man killed in the rally shooting has been identified as a former Pennsylvania fire chief. Meanwhile, Trump is defiant, saying he “cannot allow” a potential assassin to change his plans ahead of the Republican convention.

The attack has also prompted debate about whether MPs in Australia need better security.

A roaming taskforce – known as Operation Guardian – meant to tackle youth crime in Queensland is leading to vulnerable children being held for weeks in adult police watch houses, data obtained by Guardian Australia shows.

Carlos Alcaraz has blown past Novak Djokovic to win his second Wimbledon title – and England faced off against Spain in the final of Euro 2024 – but lost.

Trump rally shooting | Donald Trump has called on Americans to “stand united” after the attempt on his life and said he will travel to Wisconsin as planned, as Joe Biden said there was “no place in America for this type of violence”. A former Pennsylvania fire chief was identified as the man killed at the Trump rally and Pennsylvania residents have been left reckoning with the atmosphere of political violence.

Gaza crisis | Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in a fresh Israeli assault on Gaza City, as Hamas was reported to have withdrawn from ceasefire talks. Gaza has just witnessed one of most violent weeks since first months of war.

Gesture banned | The German city of Bremen has banned the use of the “silent fox” gesture – used to call for silence in classrooms – because of its similarity to an extremist, far-right sign.

Shannon Doherty | The actor known for her roles in Beverly Hills: 90210, Charmed, Little House on the Prairie and Heathers has died of breast cancer aged 53.
