As the US grapples with the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump and investigators delve more into the life and possible motivations of the suspected gunman, the man killed in the rally shooting has been identified as a former Pennsylvania fire chief. Meanwhile, Trump is defiant, saying he “cannot allow” a potential assassin to change his plans ahead of the Republican convention. The attack has also prompted debate about whether MPs in Australia need better security. A roaming taskforce – known as Operation Guardian – meant to tackle youth crime in Queensland is leading to vulnerable children being held for weeks in adult police watch houses, data obtained by Guardian Australia shows.
