TOP OF THE AGENDA | Markets react to Trump's promised tariffs |
|
| | Some Canadian stores are beginning to remove American products. Credit: Reuters | Stock markets in Asia and Europe have reacted negatively to President Trump's announcement of tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China. From Tuesday, a 25% import tax will hit Canadian and Mexican goods entering the US, with 10% on Chinese goods, in addition to existing tariffs. It marks the escalation of a trade war that Trump has anticipated throughout his presidential campaign, citing border security, inflows of drugs and trade deficits as reasons for the restrictions. The list of tariff targets could expand - asked by the BBC if the EU was next, Trump said "it will definitely happen", and suggested it would be “pretty soon”. |

BEYOND THE HEADLINES | Greenland's history weighs on its future |
|
| | | Around two-thirds of Greenland's population say they want to be independent from Denmark - but there's a caveat. Credit: EPA/EFE | The question of Greenland's future has attained a new sense of urgency after US President Donald Trump's apparent bid for control. A recent poll suggested only 6% of Greenlanders want to become part of the US. When it comes to the question of independence from Denmark, the answer is more complicated. |

And finally... | Endangered male frogs have 'given birth' to 33 tiny young in the UK as part of an urgent mission to rescue the species from a devastating fungal disease. Southern Darwin's frog tadpoles grow up inside the vocal sacs of their fathers and are 'born' through their mouths as froglets. The brooding dads made an incredible 7,000-mile journey by boat, plane, and car to London Zoo from their remote island off the southern coast of Chile. | |
