TOP OF THE AGENDA | Questions hanging over US-Ukraine deal |
|
| | Trump has hailed the deal as an opportunity for the US to get America's "money back". Credit: Reuters | President Trump said he will meet Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday to sign "a very big agreement" giving the US access to the country's rare earth minerals. Key details have yet to be made public, but one of the provisions discussed is the creation of an "investment fund" for Ukraine's reconstruction. Zelensky also said that he is seeking security guarantees. Speaking to the press after his first cabinet meeting, Trump suggested the US involvement on that front would be limited. "We’re going to have Europe do that", he said. Trump also discussed other initiatives, such as a "gold card" allowing wealthy foreigners to apply for US residency and a registry of undocumented migrants. Here's a recap. |

| No peace for Syria's Kurds after Assad | | Women in Rojava have been actively involved in every aspect of political, social, and military life. Credit: BBC | The end of the Assad regime marked a turning point for Syria. But in the north-east, where the Kurds have been running the self-declared autonomous region of Rojava since 2012, the future remains uncertain as the conflict with their northern neighbour, Turkey, has no end in sight. |

| | | The smell of gasoline fills the air, and the deafening sound of generators can be heard everywhere. Locals tell me that most of the power stations, refineries, and even telecommunications antennas have been destroyed by Turkish air strikes over the past two years.
At a restaurant, I ask a man with grey hair and a stick in his hands how old he is. I guess he is about 80, but the answer he gives embarrasses me. "I am 60," he says. It's clear that people here have been exhausted by war, having witnessed so much death and bloodshed. And now the threat of another battle is looming. |

And finally... in Hollywood | Ahead of the Academy Awards on Sunday 2 March, nominees from all categories were invited to mingle over dinner and cocktails in Los Angeles. They also posed for the annual Oscars "class" photo, which is usually taken earlier in the awards season, but was delayed this year because of the wildfires. At long last, here's 12 things that make the photo stand out. | |
