Trump Flips Out at NYT, Says It Should ‘Beg’ for His Mercy

Donald Trump flew into a temper tantrum first thing Tuesday morning, this time aiming his vitriol at The New York Times. The president appeared to be flipping out after a column from Paul Krugman tore into him and the Republican Party over the Mueller report, writing that Trump “betrayed” the country and “the modern GOP is perfectly willing to sell out America if that’s what it takes to get tax cuts for the wealthy.” In a set of truly unhinged tweets, the president hit out, writing: “Paul Krugman, of the Fake News New York Times, has lost all credibility, as has the Times itself, with his false and highly inaccurate writings on me. He is obsessed with hatred, just as others are obsessed with how stupid he is ... I wonder if the New York Times will apologize to me a second time, as they did after the 2016 Election. But this one will have to be a far bigger & better apology. On this one they will have to get down on their knees & beg for forgiveness—they are truly the Enemy of the People!” The newspaper never apologized to Trump—the president appears to be misrepresenting a short letter to readers in November 2016 thanking them for loyalty and saying it would “rededicate” itself to journalism after Trump’s unexpected victory.

2. REVENGE
Sri Lanka: Easter Attacks Were ‘Retaliation’ for New Zealand

The deadly attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday that killed more than 320 people were in direct response to the mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand last month, the Sri Lankan government has claimed. Sri Lankan Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardene told the country’s parliament Tuesday that investigations had shown “this attack was carried out in retaliation for the attack against Muslims in Christchurch,” according to The Guardian. An intelligence memo handed to government officials weeks before the attack shows that one suspect in the bombings updated his social-media accounts “with extremist content” after a right-wing extremist killed 50 Muslim worshippers in Christchurch. However, it’s likely that the highly sophisticated attacks in Sri Lanka would have required months of planning, so may have already been in the works ahead of the New Zealand massacre. Wijewardene also told parliament that the death toll had climbed to 321 people.

WH Orders Clearance Official Not to Comply With Dem Subpoena

Donald Trump is going all out to thwart House Democrats’ investigations into the murkier aspects of his presidency. On Monday, he sued the House Oversight Committee chairman in a desperate attempt to prevent a subpoena of his financial records, and now the White House has ordered a top security official not to comply with a House subpoena demanding an interview. Carl Kline, who was in charge of the security-clearance process and now works at the Defense Department, was instructed late Monday to not appear at Tuesday’s interview, claiming that Democrats were looking for access to confidential information. House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings previously said he could seek to hold Kline in contempt of Congress if he failed to appear for the interview. Michael Purpura, deputy counsel to Trump, said the subpoena “unconstitutionally encroaches on fundamental Executive Branch interests.” Kline’s attorney said his client would listen to his employer. Kline reportedly approved Jared Kushner’s security clearance despite several red flags raised by career officials.

4. ‘INHERENT AMERICAN RIGHT’
Bernie: Terrible People Like Boston Bomber Should Have Vote

Bernie Sanders wants all felons—including the Boston Marathon bomber and sex criminals—to be able to vote, saying that “even terrible people” should have their say on the future of the United States. Sanders made the remarks Monday night in response to a question at a CNN town-hall event in New Hampshire. A student asked if he would support enfranchising “the Boston Marathon bomber, a convicted terrorist and murderer” or if he thought people convicted of sexual assault “should have the opportunity to vote for politicians who have a direct impact on women’s rights?” Sanders responded: “I think the right to vote is inherent to our democracy. Yes, even for terrible people, because once you start chipping away, and you say ‘Well that guy committed a terrible crime, not going to let him vote’ or ‘That person did that, not going to let that person vote,’ you’re running down a slippery slope.” He added that being imprisoned “should not take away their inherent American right to participate in our democracy.”

6. ‘HUMILIATED’
United Employee Charged With Racist Abuse of Black Customer

A United Airlines employee who was accused of calling a black customer a “monkey” has been charged in Texas with disorderly conduct, The New York Times reports. A misdemeanor charge was filed a month after the Houston Police Department issued Carmella Davano a citation for profane and abusive language in a public place. Davano was accused of repeatedly calling customer Cacilie Hughes “a monkey” and “a shining monkey.” Hughes told the newspaper: “I walked up to the woman, Carmella, and said, ‘Hi, do you have a refund code available?’ and she started yelling at me, calling me a monkey... I was humiliated, I was crying and I was the only black woman in the area.” Two witnesses said they saw and heard Davano abuse Hughes, according to Houston police. The airline said in a statement: “We have withheld the employee from service since the night of the incident pending an internal investigation.”

Kamala Harris: It’s Time to Impeach Donald Trump

Presidential hopeful Kamala Harris has urged Congress to begin the process of impeaching Donald Trump. At a CNN town-hall forum in New Hampshire on Monday night, Harris backed an earlier call from rival candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren for impeachment proceedings after the release of Robert Mueller’s report on the Russia investigation. “I think we have very good reason that there is an investigation that has been conducted that has produced evidence that tells us that this president and his administration have engaged in obstruction of justice,” said Harris, adding: “I believe Congress should take the steps toward impeachment.” Fellow candidate Pete Buttigieg said the president has “made it pretty clear that he deserves impeachment,” but added that he would “leave it to the House and the Senate to figure that out.” Sen. Amy Klobuchar was even more cautious on impeachment, and Sen. Bernie Sanders said he worries a move to impeach Trump would distract voters from Democratic policy ahead of the 2020 election.

8. ROYAL NUISANCE
Trump Will Visit Queen Elizabeth in June, U.K. Reports Say

Donald Trump will be honored with a grand ceremonial trip to visit Queen Elizabeth II in Britain this June, according to reports. The BBC reports that Buckingham Palace on Tuesday will announce the state visit that is expected to take place in the first part of the month. The state visit differs from the working trip to Britain last year—it will be a much grander affair and the Queen will act as Trump’s host for the duration. During state visits, the Queen normally treats her guests to an opulent palace banquet, a ceremonial carriage ride to Buckingham Palace, and Trump could even address the Houses of Parliament. During last year’s trip to Britain, Trump was greeted by thousands of protesters and complained about a huge balloon in the shape of him wearing a diaper.

9. TOO MUCH
Dad Gives Moving Tribute to U.S. Kid Killed in Sri Lanka

The dad of an 11-year-old American boy who was killed in a series of terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday has given a heartbreaking tribute to his kid, saying the terrorists “don’t know what they took.” Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, a fifth grader from Washington D.C., was one of at least four Americans who were among the 310 people killed in the attacks. “The terrorists didn’t know who they were killing. But we should know what the world lost, what they took from the world,” said the boy’s father, Alex Arrow. “They took a great mind who was going to be a neuroscientist and work on Alzheimer’s diseases.” Kieran was learning Chinese, Sinhalese, and Mandarin, according to his dad, and was keen on karate and playing the trumpet. “I don’t know what’s in the mind of a terrorist. I’m sure they don’t know what they took,” said Arrow. “They just blew themselves up, they have no idea. No idea. His story should be told.”

10. GRIM NEW CHAPTER
New IRA Takes Responsibility for Killing Lyra McKee

The New IRA has claimed responsibility for the death of a Northern Irish journalist who was shot and killed last Thursday, The Irish News reports. The paramilitary group admitted the killing of reporter Lyra McKee, 29, who was shot in the head during a riot in the Creggan section of the city of Derry. The gunman, who was targeting police following law-enforcement raids of the area, allegedly shot McKee by accident. “In the course of attacking the enemy, Lyra McKee was tragically killed while standing beside enemy forces,” the New IRA said in a statement to The Irish News. “The IRA offer our full and sincere apologies to the partner, family and friends of Lyra McKee for her death.” The group also blamed cops for “provoking” the clash that came before the gunfire. Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Police Service said Tuesday they had arrested a 57-year-old woman under the terrorism act in connection with the killing.
