I recently read a passage in a Ken Carey book, Return of the Bird Tribes, that sent me into deep self-reflection.
Actually, I’ve found many passages of his, between all of his books, that do that to me. But this one in particular I want to share for its relevance on the state of the world and the festive month before us.
He notes there’s a particular shift in human behavior that marks a major leap forward in private, individual consciousness: When one’s chosen motivation is more frequently centered around their love for others, than it is their fear for self.
Yeah? Feel that?! I’ll let your mind run with it for a while!
Not that you needed to read that, but I did. I think for most of my life fear for self has been my greatest driver. But reading those words from Carey, I’ll again challenge myself to be far more aware of what others are going through than I used to be, especially as we now see record-breaking lines at foodbanks across the United States.
In this spirit, John, I hope that you and your family are happy and well, and ready for the best December of your life, so far. May the silver lining of 2020 find its way to you, sooner rather than later, and set you up for living at a whole ‘nother level in 2021! Thanks for being who you are, I’m glad our paths have crossed.
Your great admirer,
