Like many in the world, I can’t help but be impressed by the mind and creations of Elon Musk. Recently, he was interviewed about his ideas for sending people to colonize Mars and how he imagined the government there would operate.
The brief interview was excellent, and the entire premise of starting out a new civilization from scratch had my head spinning with excitement. It forces us to not only consider what we’ve learned about society on earth, but to pose the question, how could we do better?! How could government be better? Education? Citizenry? Our social and behavioral standards?
I often look for paradigms and analogies to teach with, and this “new civilization question” is the perfect set-up.
John, if you were in charge of Base Camp Mars and floating new ideas, how would you answer the above questions? Would you suggest most people be paid approximately the same? Would the geologists deserve more than the doctors? Would the artists be paid less than accountants? Would everyone receive health care? Would you encourage community over individualism? Or individualism over community? Should there be a President who decides things for the group or should everyone in the group vote on major issues?
And finally, how do your answers to the above questions differ when applied to your life on earth?
