Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Twitter

Joe Biden’s Pittsburgh speech Monday focused on addressing the violence in cities like Kenosha and Portland, condemning the rioting, and responding to the attacks from President Donald Trump that it would only get worse in Biden’s America.

At one point, Biden brought up the Trump campaign line “you won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America” to respond that violence is already happening and asking if people are really safe in Trump’s America.

The Trump War Room Twitter account shared the snippet of Biden just saying “You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America”:

The trimming obviously gave an opposite impression of what Biden actually said, and the Trump War Room account was called out on social media. Loudly and plenty.

The account then mocked reporters as being "triggered" by a joke.

However, Twitter correctly identified the clip as "manipulated media" so that anyone seeing it would not be misled by the edit.

In the past Twitter has been accused of bias and censorship, but it's hard to think of a more appropriate and called-for use of the "manipulated media" tag than this.

Well, except for when they had to use it for Republican Steve Scalise just two days ago.

MEDIA LOSER:
Laura Ingraham

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham quickly jumped in during her interview with President Donald Trump in an attempt to head off a highly inappropriate analogy, where he compared police officers who “choke” by shooting Jacob Blake in the back or kneeling on George Floyd’s neck until he dies to missing a three-foot golf putt.

Unsuccessfully is the key word here.

As one Huffington Post editor put it, Ingraham was repeatedly trying to "coach" Trump away from damaging comments, and repeatedly failed to do so.

Ingraham warned him his "people from dark shadows" comment "sounds like a conspiracy theory," but he was not dissuaded from embracing the old Facebook conspiracy theory.

Ingraham had to interject at one point "you're not saying all poor people are criminals" to guide Trump's commentary.

The interview made big news and got a lot of attention, but the effort to steer Trump into sounding reasonable by providing him with a better choice of words was not only manipulative of the setting and audience, it ultimately failed.

Leaving Ingraham looking to her audience like she spent the interview correcting the president, and to the rest of the media like she couldn't handle her business.

Lowering the Temperature

On Sunday, Democratic nominee Joe Biden issued a statement about leadership, lowering the temperature in the country, and coming together as a nation.

Apparently unmoved by the appeal, Democratic nominee Joe Biden on Monday delivered a fiery speech condemning Donald Trump as the source and cause of violence in the country. Conservative Matt Lewis was very impressed with the speech, as were most cable news contributors and journalists.

Similarly temperature-indifferent, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy went on an epic Twitter tirade accusing Trump of premeditated mass murder, and doubled down on it when speaking with MSNBC's Chris Hayes

More money than Trump

Kanye West tested his fate during an interview for Nick Cannon’s podcast Cannon Class, claiming he cannot be in “cahoots” with the GOP as he runs for president because he has “more money than Trump.”

Hilarious

The hosts of Fox & Friends had a hearty laugh at former Vice President Joe Biden for delivering a speech while taking precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Belafonte

Singer and activist Harry Belafonte made his case to vote President Donald Trump out after White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted a fake video to bash Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Shootings

Trump on Monday dodged direct questions from the press and refused to condemn 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, a Trump supporter who allegedly killed two protestors in Kenosha last week while illegally possessing an assault-style rifle.

DETAINED JOURNALIST

An Australian citizen who worked as an anchor for China’s state-backed CGTN news network has been detained without explanation.

In a statement, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said her country’s government received “formal notification” of Cheng Lei’s detention on August 14. Australian officials spoke with her by video on August 27.

“The process within the Chinese system does not require the laying of charges at this point,” Payne noted in an interview with 2GB, a radio station in Sydney. She is reportedly being held in “residential surveillance,” where China can hold suspects for up to six months before they are formally arrested.

So far, there has been no comment from Cheng Lei's employer.
