'HE BETTER BE CAREFUL:' For the first time in 29 years, the Louisiana Legislature overturned a governor's veto Wednesday, casting aside Democrat John Bel Edwards' rejection of the congressional redistricting map that Republican lawmakers had drawn. Said Edwards: "It speaks so poorly of us, collectively, what transpired today. This was not our finest day." Said Rep. Alan Seabaugh, R-Shreveport: “It’s probably just the first veto override. We tried last year and failed. This time we broke down the door. He better be careful.”
ANOTHER FIRST: Also making history Wednesday was the Orleans Parish School Board, which selected a woman for the first time in its 181-year history as the 43,000-student school system's long-term superintendent. Next step: negotiating a contract with Avis Williams, the North Carolina native who is now superintendent of Selma, Alabama, public schools.
STAYING PUT: Thomas Morstead was a fan favorite during his 17 years as the New Orleans Saints' punter. And even though the team released him in 2021, Morstead and his wife, Lauren, have stayed put, building their modern Tudor dream house in Old Metairie.
