Juanita Nielsen is the famous face of the battle to save Sydney from overdevelopment — but behind her mysterious disappearance lies another suspicious death. This week, we bring you the story of the 23-year old Aboriginal woman who died in a suspicious house fire on Victoria Street in the midst of a battle between residents and developers. It's a story of how police have approached Aboriginal communities in Sydney, and which bodies get to be counted as victims. For too long this story has been a footnote to the Nielsen case — one of Australia's most notorious true-crime mysteries. Now, we're putting it back in the spotlight, to launch the new Unravel true-crime series: Juanita. In this seven-episode podcast, Juanita's family go in search for answers about what happened to the journalist who threatened the interests of Sydney's powerful underground figures. See what they found by listening to the first episodes on the ABC Listen app, or wherever you get your podcasts. Until next week, Annika Blau, RN digital editor Enjoy getting Radio National in your inbox? Forward to a friend so they can too! |
