While the Bitcoin network will continue to work regardless of the decisions jurisdictions make to regulate Bitcoin, bills that would protect the right to mine bitcoin and run a Bitcoin node are good things, as they would send clear messages to politicians against  Bitcoin that they will not regulate Bitcoin away in the United States.

Mississippi, Missouri Lawmakers Introduce Bills To Protect The Rights To Mine Bitcoin And Run A Node

Lawmakers from the U.S. states of Mississippi and Missouri have introduced bills that would protect their citizens' rights to mine bitcoin and to run a Bitcoin node. 
Protections in the bill also prohibit:

  • Political subdivisions of the state creating requirements which are not in line with other data center requirements, and changing the zoning of bitcoin miners without proper notice.
  • Outlawing of discriminatory energy rates directed at bitcoin miners.
  • Sound ordinances directed at mining facilities that are not in-line with other sound ordinances within the community.
  • Operating nodes or miners being considered the act of money transmitting.
Although Bitcoin would still function regardless of what regulators decide, it is nice to see North American jurisdictions embracing basic protections for the usage of bitcoin.

🏚️ Genesis Bankruptcy

Crypto Lender Genesis Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Genesis Global Capital and its Asia Pacific sister firm has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in order to restructure itself.

The filing states that the firm aims to maximize value for all clients and stakeholders and strengthen its business for the future. The filing also mentions that Genesis has more than $150 million cash on hand to support its operations and facilitate the restructuring process.

Genesis is a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group, Barry Silbert's company which as of late has come under great pressure from Grayscale shareholders who fear that their investment into the Bitcoin trust product will not be able to yield a prophet, or return any money invested.

This Genesis bankruptcy is just another brick in a situation that seems to be piling on top of DCG.

Wasabi Wallet and 12 other Bitcoin projects and companies are hosting "Hunting Sats," a contest to crack a wallet containing 3,454,811 sats.

Participants must arrange the seed words and passphrase in the right order to access the funds. The partners will share their words over the week starting January 23, which will progressively allow the brute forcing of the wallet to become easier and easier.

If no one has successfully accessed the bitcoin by the end of the week, more hints will be shared.
