Recently opened at the JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles gallery space, the touring exhibition KUMIHIMO | The Art of Japanese Silk Braiding by DOMYO is the first in the United States to illuminate the vibrant art of Japanese silk braiding, orâ¯kumihimo (âbraided cordsâ) by exploring its history, craftsmanship, and ways the tradition is innovating for today and tomorrow. Produced by Yusoku Kumihimo Domyo (Domyo), a Tokyo-based company that has been making braided silk cords by hand since 1652, the exhibition introduces the diverse techniques and long history ofâ¯kumihimo, which began in the 6th century as an art form of the Imperial Court and Buddhist temples.
