Recently opened at the JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles gallery space, the touring exhibition KUMIHIMO | The Art of Japanese Silk Braiding by DOMYO is the first in the United States to illuminate the vibrant art of Japanese silk braiding, or kumihimo (“braided cords”) by exploring its history, craftsmanship, and ways the tradition is innovating for today and tomorrow. Produced by Yusoku Kumihimo Domyo (Domyo), a Tokyo-based company that has been making braided silk cords by hand since 1652, the exhibition introduces the diverse techniques and long history of kumihimo, which began in the 6th century as an art form of the Imperial Court and Buddhist temples.
