U.S. Defense Department officials on Aug. 22 activated the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) for just the third time in its 70-year history. The order officially requested a minimum of 18 aircraft from six airlines that participate in the voluntary program.

Their role is to help people evacuated from Kabul get to designated safe haven transit points in several countries, including Bahrain, Germany and Qatar, before they continue their journeys.
