1. CNN AND HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN TO HOLD L.G.B.T.Q.-FOCUSED DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL TOWN HALL: CNN has partnered with the Human Rights Campaign to hold a Democratic presidential town hall focused on L.G.B.T.Q. issues. The October 10 event will air the night before National Coming Out Day and, according to H.R.C., will have the largest ever audience for a Democratic presidential town hall focused on issues affecting the L.G.B.T.Q. community. The event will take place at the Novo in Los Angeles. CNN: "Invitations to participate in the town hall will be extended to Democratic presidential hopefuls who meet the D.N.C.'s qualifications for the October 2019 primary debates. Candidates must reach 2 percent in at least four national polls identified by the DNC to determine eligibility. The polls for this town hall must be released between June 28, 2019 and September 25, 2019. … An H.R.C. Foundation spokesperson said the audience will be comprised of invited guests, L.G.B.T.Q. stakeholders, and members of civic organizations. No public tickets will be available." 2. TOKYO MAY USE SNOW MACHINES TO COOL DOWN 2020 OLYMPICS: Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are testing machines that would emit man-made snow as a way to keep visitors cool. This summer, Tokyo experienced a blistering heatwave that killed at least 57 people. ESPN: “Artificial snow is the latest strategy being considered to counter high humidity and summer temperatures that commonly exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) in July and August, when the games are scheduled in the Japanese capital next summer. A snow-making machine will be tried out at a test canoeing event on September 13 in Tokyo, a spokesman for the games' organizing committee said.” 3. MOST FASHION BRANDS HAVE PULLED EVENTS FROM NEW YORK ARTS VENUE OVER TRUMP TIES: The Shed, a nonprofit arts center that opened in New York’s Hudson Yards development in April, was slated to be a popular venue for New York Fashion Week shows. But after news broke that developer Stephen Ross held a fund-raiser for Donald Trump, fashion designers and institutions such as Michael Kors, Vera Wang, and the Academy of Art University have pulled their events from the $475 million venue. New York Post: “Fashion week creator, Fern Mallis, declared the Shed, ‘kind of over.’ ‘If you know people showing at the Shed, please tell me because I don’t know who is,’ Mallis said. Even the only brand seemingly brave enough to stage its runway show there—Helmut Lang—better suit up for a backlash. As one anti-Trump fashion editor said of the September 7 event: ‘I’m skipping Helmut—I wouldn’t step foot within the Shed.’” 4. SWEDEN TO HOST AVICII TRIBUTE CONCERT SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS: A tribute concert for the late DJ and musician Avicii, who died in 2018 in an apparent suicide, will take place December 5 in his hometown of Stockholm, Sweden. Singers featured on Avicii’s songs including Adam Lambert and Rita Ora will perform, as well as fellow DJs such as David Guetta and Kygo. The Tim Bergling Foundation, the foundation featuring Avicii’s real name, will produce Avicii Tribute Concert for Mental Health Awareness, which will raise funds for organizations that address mental health needs and suicide prevention. Variety: "‘Tim had plans for his music to be performed together with a large live band, and now we are realizing his dream and giving fans a chance to experience his music in this unique way,’ says Klas Bergling, Tim’s father. The concert will mark the first time that many of these songs have been performed live, and also the first time that many of the singers and collaborators whose performances and productions made his music so special gathered together in one place to perform his music.” 5. TRUMP TO ATTEND BEVERLY HILLS FUND-RAISER: Despite constantly criticizing Hollywood, President Trump is slated to attend a fund-raiser in Beverly Hills during Emmys week as part of his re-election efforts. The event on September 17 is selling tickets for $1,000 to as much as $100,000 per couple. The Hollywood Reporter: “The 90210 event also happens to fall during Emmy week when the city will be abuzz with various events celebrating the TV business, something Trump frequently comments on. The evening event is hosted by Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, RNC co-chairman Tommy Hicks Jr., campaign manager Brad Parscale, and Trump Victory finance chairman Todd Ricketts.” |
